Terms of the action or commitment

The Saint-Gobain Group is committed to using only recyclable plastics by 2030 and to gradually increasing the recycled or bio-sourced content of these plastics to a minimum of 30% by 2030. Actions will focus on changing the type of packaging and the choice of materials used, in close collaboration with the group’s suppliers. These actions are likely to have an impact on the Saint-Gobain Group’s industrial processes as well as on its marketing strategy when packaging is a vector of communication for the brand or the product, and should therefore involve the departments concerned. In addition, the Group is likely to be involved in setting up local channels for the recovery of used packaging, with a view to ensuring its quality for recycling by plastic packaging producers.

2022 follow-up of the action

Date of follow-up

Methods of validation of the follow-up

The 2021 performance was measured on the basis of the amount of packaging purchased, and only the recyclability indicator was taken into account, based on the Group's internal definition: ([...]packaging made of materials that can be used again, usually after processing; recyclable materials include glass, metal, card, paper and – increasingly – certain plastics. Warning: being technically recyclable does not mean that the packaging is actually recycled at its end of life but that the recyclability has been already proven technically feasible at industrial scale”).. The calculation methodology for the recycled content indicator is currently being validated.

Company's comments
The recyclability criterion was calculated on the basis of the financial amount of purchases for each type of packaging, considering pessimistically as “non-recyclable” any sub-category of packaging for which there are doubts about the recyclability criterion (multi-component bags, plastic buckets, thermoformed containers, big bags, etc.). The Saint-Gobain Group’s 2030 commitment to packaging focuses on the evolution of the type of packaging and the choice of materials used, in close collaboration with packaging suppliers and producers. These packaging sustainability criteria are now being integrated into the eco-design phase of new products or systems, and will also have an impact on the Saint-Gobain Group’s industrial processes and marketing strategy.
